When Aria initially started meditating, she had a hard time putting her mind at ease. For the first two minutes, she “could hardly sit still,” she explains. The need of starting small became clear to me, nevertheless. These days, her recommendation for beginners is to start with five minutes of mindful breathing.

Relax into a comfortable position, shut your eyes, and focus on your breathing. Lightly exhale through your mouth after taking a deep breath in through your nose. Aria points out that all it takes is a few deep breaths to have a significant impact.

The right environment is vital for Aria. “You don’t need a nice meditation space,” she explains. “Find a quiet place where you can relax.”

Her favorite way to unwind is to dim the lights and light a scented candle. Creating a serene atmosphere signals to your body and mind that it is time to unwind.

Welcome guided meditations

If sitting quietly gives you the willies, Aria says you could try guided meditations. “Man, these days you can find absolutely amazing apps and YouTube channels,” she says. “Reducing distractions and improving concentration are two benefits of guided meditations.”

Especially if you are new to meditation, listening to a calming voice can help direct your thoughts and make the practice more approachable.

Develop Thankfulness

At the end of each meditation session, Aria usually says a prayer of gratitude. The speaker mentions that she takes a moment to reflect on her blessings. “This is a simple technique to boost my mood and finish the session on a positive note.”

Meditation does not have to be challenging, according to Aria. To “clear your thoughts” is not the goal, she explains. “It is all about finding a moment of calm and connecting with who you are.”
